Traffic Stop Leads to Custody and Questioning
The apprehension of Robinson occurred shortly after Hammond police discovered the wounded fourteen year old victim. Officers successfully intercepted Robinson after pulling him over for a speeding violation. Upon being questioned regarding the shooting Robinson reportedly admitted to investigators that he had been playing with a firearm when it went off. This admission formed the primary basis for the negligent homicide charge as authorities worked to reconstruct the timeline of the evening.
Medical Response and Victim Identification
Following the shooting the teenage victim was immediately transported to a nearby medical facility for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of hospital staff the girl later succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the area hospital. While the suspect has been identified as a resident of the Hammond area officials have not yet released the name of the juvenile victim out of respect for her family during the ongoing investigation.
Legal Definitions of Negligent Homicide in Louisiana
The decision to book Robinson for negligent homicide reflects the initial findings of the Hammond Police Department regarding the lack of apparent intent to kill. Under state law this charge typically applies in cases where a death results from criminal negligence or a disregard for the safety of others such as the unsafe handling of a loaded weapon. The eighteen year old remains in custody as prosecutors determine how to proceed with the formal filing of charges in the Tangipahoa Parish court system.
