The study highlights a critical distinction between agricultural output and food security. Most major global economies are specialized, producing vast quantities of specific commodities while neglecting others. Guyana manages to exceed domestic demand significantly in starchy staples and fruits while maintaining sufficient production in more challenging categories like dairy and fish. This holistic self-sufficiency provides the South American nation with a unique buffer against the volatile global food supply chain, which researchers warn is increasingly susceptible to climate and geopolitical shocks.
Strategic Shortfalls in Leading Agricultural Economies
Even the world's most advanced agricultural superpowers fail the test of total self-sufficiency. Both China and Vietnam rank high, meeting six out of the seven essential food groups, but both are limited by structural constraints in dairy production. In North America, the United States and Canada only meet four of the seven categories. Despite being top exporters of meat and grains, both nations depend heavily on imports for fresh produce due to shorter northern growing seasons and high consumer demand for a variety of out-of-season fruits and vegetables.
