A Celebration of Inter-Ethnic and Religious Unity

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State hosted leaders and stakeholders of the Muslim community for a special Ramadan Iftar over the weekend, utilizing the holy month as a backdrop to celebrate the state's social cohesion. Addressing the gathering at the Government House in Uyo, the Governor defined Ramadan as a season for reflection, compassion, and unity. He specifically lauded the Muslim faithful for their devotion to peaceful coexistence, noting that their presence has forged a "unity of purpose" essential for sustainable development.

The Role of Non-Indigenes in State Development

A central theme of the Governor's address was the functional necessity of a diverse population. Governor Eno argued that no society can grow impressively without the contributions of visitors and residents from other regions. He expressed personal fulfillment in seeing a "mixed community," stating that the presence of individuals who have resided in Akwa Ibom for over 26 years is a testament to the state's progress and welcoming environment. "Any place that one goes to, and he doesn’t see a mixed community, then he should know that something is wrong with that place," Eno enthused.

Political Support and Continued Collaboration

Recalling the 2023 gubernatorial elections, the Governor thanked the Muslim community for their significant role in his victory, acknowledging that many worked tirelessly to ensure his success at the polls. He assured the religious body of his administration’s unwavering support for their future programs and encouraged members of the community to engage freely in government activities. The event was attended by top state functionaries, including the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Udeme Otong, and the Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah.
