A Strategic Shift Toward Energy Independence

The Delta State Government has launched the "Light Up To Industrialise Delta Initiative," a comprehensive program designed to eliminate "epileptic" power supply and position the state as an industrial powerhouse. At a high-level meeting in Asaba, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved a diagnostic roadmap to address structural deficiencies within the state’s power value chain. The initiative marks a transition toward localized energy management, following extensive fieldwork conducted by technical consultants since late 2025.

Legislative Reforms and Regulatory Oversight

A cornerstone of the new strategy is a sweeping reform of Delta’s electricity laws. Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr. Sunny Ekedayen, announced that the administration will soon establish a State Electricity Commission. This body will be responsible for regulating and coordinating the evolving local power sector, ensuring that infrastructure gaps are closed through institutional oversight. This legal overhaul is intended to create a stable environment for long-term private and public investment.

Optimizing Existing Generation Capacity

Rather than focusing solely on building new power plants, the state intends to capitalize on underutilized electricity from existing sources, including the Okpai, Ughelli, and Sapele plants.
