Legislative Momentum for Regional Restructuring
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has signaled a major shift in the national legislative stance regarding the long standing demand for the creation of Anioma State. Speaking at the All Progressives Congress South-South Zonal Congress on Wednesday, Akpabio confirmed his willingness to support the initiative, which seeks to expand the number of states in the South-East region. This high level endorsement provides a critical boost to the proposal currently being championed within the National Assembly by Senator Ned Nwoko, who represents the Delta North Senatorial District. According to Akpabio, the structural adjustment is not merely a political move but a mechanism for bringing focused development to the local populations.
The Administrative Realignment of Asaba and Warri
Under the proposed framework, the current administrative map of the region would undergo a fundamental transformation. Akpabio stated that the city of Asaba would transition into the capital of the newly formed Anioma State, rather than remaining the seat of power for Delta State. Consequently, the capital of the remaining Delta State territory would be relocated to the commercial hub of Warri. This geographical and political reorganization aims to balance administrative presence across the Niger Delta while addressing the cultural and historical aspirations of the Anioma people. The Senate President emphasized that such a move would not present a problem for the federal government if it represents the unified demand of the region.
Broadening the South Eastern Political Landscape
The creation of Anioma State is strategically viewed as a pathway to increasing the South-East's representation within the federation. Akpabio noted that the addition of a new state would likely result in an increase in progressive political influence, describing the potential development as another broom for the ruling party in that part of Nigeria. By integrating Anioma into the South-East bloc, proponents hope to address long standing complaints regarding the unequal distribution of states across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones. This alignment is expected to alter the balance of power in the National Assembly and the Federal Executive Council by providing more seats and ministerial slots to the expanded region.
