State Government Targets Traditional Shrines Linked to Communal Violence
In a significant escalation of state intervention into local conflicts, Governor Francis Nwifuru has ordered the total demolition of shrines and deities within the Amasiri community. The directive was issued following an expanded state security meeting where the government assessed the community's alleged complicity in a recent wave of extreme violence. According to a statement from the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor, the traditional sites are being targeted as part of a broader crackdown on the infrastructure of conflict that has fueled a bloody feud with the neighbouring Okporojo community in Edda LGA.
Gruesome Decapitations Trigger Severe Administrative Sanctions
The long-standing land dispute between Amasiri and Okporojo reached a horrific peak when attackers murdered and decapitated four individuals, escaping with their severed heads. In direct response to these atrocities, Governor Nwifuru has moved beyond standard policing by imposing sweeping sanctions. These include the immediate sacking of all political appointees from the Amasiri area, the formal dethronement of its traditional rulers, the closure of local schools, and the imposition of a mandatory curfew. The Governor has made it clear that these restrictions will only be reconsidered once the victims' remains are returned.
Boundary Demarcation Committee Formed to Resolve Root Cause
To prevent further bloodshed, the Ebonyi state government has constituted a specialized 19-member committee tasked with the physical demarcation of the disputed boundary. Led by Paul Nwobashi, the Commissioner for Border and Conflict Resolution, the committee includes the state’s Surveyor General and the Commissioner for Lands and Survey. This technical intervention follows a signed agreement between both parties to allow for an official state-led separation of the territories. The government hopes that a clear, legally recognized border will eliminate the primary motivation for the recurring clashes.
