A Historic Recognition of Kenyan Military Leadership

In a display of strengthening bilateral ties, Kenya’s Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, has been inducted into the National Order of the Legion of Honour, France’s highest order of merit. The award, established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, is traditionally reserved for individuals who demonstrate exceptional service to their nation and the global community. General Kahariri was recognized for his "steadfast leadership" and his pivotal role in fostering defence cooperation between Kenya and France. This conferment places Kahariri among an elite group of international military leaders recognized by the French state for promoting stability and excellence.

Regional Security and Bilateral Cooperation

The award ceremony took place in a uniquely maritime setting on board the French amphibious assault ship DIXMUDE. French Ambassador to Kenya, Arnaud Suquet, presided over the event, praising the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) for their proactive role in maintaining peace within the East African region. Suquet emphasized that the honour reflects the deep-standing military partnership between the two nations, particularly in maritime security and counter-terrorism efforts. The Ambassador noted that General Kahariri’s strategic vision has been instrumental in aligning the security objectives of both Nairobi and Paris.

Major General Joyce Sitienei Honoured with Gold Medal

The ceremony also highlighted the achievements of Major General Joyce Sitienei, who received the National Defence Medal (Gold Level). Currently serving as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the National Defence University-Kenya, Maj Gen Sitienei was recognized for her outstanding service in strategic security studies and national defence. The National Defence Medal, established in 1982, rewards professional excellence and dedication within the armed forces. Her recognition underscores the growing role of Kenyan women in top-tier military leadership and academic strategy, further cementation the KDF’s reputation for professional diversity.
