A Violent Domestic Escalation
The search for a suspect involved in a lethal shooting spree in the Kanana section of Rabie Ridge concluded on Saturday morning. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the violence began Friday morning following a domestic dispute between the suspect and his girlfriend. The altercation escalated into a mass shooting, resulting in the deaths of the girlfriend and two other individuals at the residence.
Law Enforcement Under Fire
When police first responded to the scene in Kanana, they were immediately met with gunfire from the suspect. During the initial exchange, one police officer sustained injuries caused by shattered glass as the suspect fought to evade capture. In addition to the three fatalities, two other women were wounded during the domestic attack. All three survivors are currently reported to be in stable condition while receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
The Pursuit and Hijacking
The suspect’s attempt to evade justice involved a series of desperate tactical maneuvers across the Gauteng province. Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi reported that after fleeing the initial scene, the man abandoned and set fire to his original getaway vehicle in an area between Ivory Park and Tembisa. He then proceeded to hijack a Toyota Avanza. However, the pursuit shifted in favor of the police when the driver of the hijacked vehicle activated a tracking device, allowing authorities to monitor the suspect's movements in real-time.
