Strategic Collaboration for Road Safety
In a direct response to rising traffic fatalities, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kaduna State Sector Command has joined forces with the State Judiciary to launch a rigorous enforcement campaign. The operation specifically targets the Kaduna-Abuja Highway, a critical transit artery frequently plagued by dangerous driving practices. Corps Commander Andrew Longkam stated on Thursday that this joint effort is designed to utilize legal weight and enforcement to deter commercial drivers from compromising passenger safety for profit.
The Crisis of Overloading and Mortality
Commander Longkam highlighted a disturbing trend among commercial transporters who routinely exceed legal passenger limits. He noted that vehicles originally designed for four passengers are often found conveying nine, while seven-seat vehicles are packed with as many as 15 people. This excessive loading significantly increases the mortality rate during road crashes, as the vehicle’s safety features and structural integrity are overwhelmed. The primary objective of this crackdown is to return the highway to manageable safety standards.
Immediate Enforcement Outcomes
The initial phase of the special intervention has already resulted in the apprehension of 18 traffic offenders. According to official reports, 10 of these motorists were booked specifically for overloading, confirming the prevalence of the issue. The remaining offenders were cited for a variety of critical infractions, including the use of substandard tires and number plate violations. Longkam emphasized that these offenses are not mere technicalities but are critical factors that lead to high fatalities on Nigerian roads.
