The Shale Windfall

The Vaca Muerta formation in Patagonia has finally overcome long-standing infrastructure bottlenecks to deliver record-breaking output. In February 2026, oil production hit 874,000 barrels per day, a 15.8% increase year-on-year. Experts now predict the country will reach the milestone of one million barrels per day by 2030.

Economically, this shift is profound. According to the Institute of International Finance (IIF):

Every $10 increase in global oil prices now generates an estimated $1.7 billion gain for Argentina.

Argentina is expected to post an energy trade surplus of over $14 billion in 2026.

This surplus is critical in containing the current-account deficit, keeping it to approximately 1% of GDP.
