A Position of Authority Used for Predatory Grooming

The community of Downers Grove was shaken following the March 2025 arrest of Christina Formella, a 29 year old special education teacher and athletic coach. Prosecutors allege that Formella systematically exploited her position of trust as both a tutor and a soccer coach to engage in a predatory relationship with a 15 year old male student. According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, the illicit contact began in early 2023 and persisted until August 2024. State’s Attorney Robert Berlin characterized the allegations as extremely disturbing, noting that the defendant allegedly leveraged her professional role to facilitate repeated sexual assaults against a minor.

Discovery of Explicit Communications and Arrest

The investigation into Formella’s conduct began on March 15, 2025, after the victim's mother reportedly uncovered sexually explicit text messages on her son’s mobile device. The minor and his mother immediately reported the evidence to the Downers Grove Police Department, leading to Formella’s arrest during a traffic stop the following day. Police body camera footage captured the former teacher’s emotional breakdown during the arrest, where she reportedly asked officers if she was in trouble while her husband was present. Despite the documented evidence found on the victim's phone, Formella later attempted to claim the student had sent the messages to himself as a form of blackmail.

Expanded Indictment Reveals Scale of Abuse

While the initial arrest focused on a small number of incidents, a June 2025 court appearance revealed a much more extensive pattern of criminal behavior. Prosecutors presented 52 new charges, bringing the total to 55 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault. During the proceedings, the prosecution described Formella as controlling and conniving, alleging that she engaged in sexual acts with the minor at least 45 times. These encounters reportedly took place in various locations, including private homes and on school grounds during regular operating hours, highlighting a total disregard for professional boundaries and legal constraints.
