Judicial Discharge Following Strategic Settlement
A high profile corruption case involving former Aviation Minister Stella Oduah reached a conclusion on Friday as Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court ordered her discharge. The decision followed a formal application by the prosecution to discontinue the 2.5 billion naira fraud proceedings against Oduah and her former aide, Gloria Odita. This legal pivot was the result of a comprehensive plea bargain agreement reached between the defendants and the Office of the Attorney General. By opting for a settlement, the government has moved to secure immediate financial recovery rather than continuing a protracted trial that began with an arraignment in December 2025.
Corporate Convictions and Mandatory Winding Up
While the individuals were discharged, the judicial focus shifted to the corporate entities utilized in the alleged fraudulent activities. The prosecution maintained an amended two count charge against Sobora International Limited and Global Offshore and Marine Limited, both of which were linked to the former minister. These companies were accused of being in unlawful possession of 838 million naira and 1.629 billion naira, respectively. Following a guilty plea entered on behalf of the firms, Justice Muazu convicted both entities and ordered that they be wound up. This corporate "death penalty" ensures that the vehicles used for the alleged criminal breach of trust are permanently removed from the commercial landscape.
Recovery of Billions for the Federal Treasury
The financial terms of the plea bargain represent a significant recovery of public funds for the Federal Government. Counsel for the prosecution, Rotimi Oyedepo, presented a bank draft of 1.2 billion naira paid as restitution as part of the negotiated agreement. Additionally, the court ordered the forfeiture of 780 million naira that had been previously recovered during the investigation phase. This combined sum of 1.98 billion naira will be returned to the national coffers. The defense counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu and Wale Balogun, did not oppose these forfeiture orders, signaling a mutual intent to resolve the financial aspects of the case without further litigation.
