Enhancing Workplace Protection and Productivity
In a major move to reform staff welfare within the Federal Civil Service, the Federal Government has operationalised the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS). The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, announced the rollout during the commissioning of the ECS Help Desk in Abuja on Saturday, April 25, 2026. The scheme is designed to provide timely financial compensation and medical support to public servants who suffer from work-related injuries, occupational diseases, or permanent disabilities. In the event of a workplace fatality, the scheme also ensures support for the families of the deceased, reinforcing the government's commitment to the dignity of its workforce.
Strategic Partnership with NSITF
The implementation of the ECS is supported by a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) and the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF). Barr. Oluwaseyi Mayomi Faleye, the Managing Director of the NSITF, highlighted that the scheme functions through a transparent, payroll-driven system. The newly established ECS Help Desk will serve as a central hub for civil servants to access information, process claims, and provide feedback, ensuring that the protection is not just a policy on paper but a functional utility for every government employee.
Complementing Existing Welfare Frameworks
Mrs. Walson-Jack emphasized that the ECS does not replace but rather complements existing safety nets, such as the Group Life Assurance Scheme. By adding a layer of protection specifically for work-related incidents, the administration aims to create a more resilient and motivated workforce. This initiative is part of a broader strategy under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to modernize the civil service and ensure that the "engine room" of the Nigerian government operates in an environment that prioritizes safety and social security.
