Diplomatic Confrontation Over a Shaky Ceasefire

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar hosted UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert in Jerusalem on Monday to address the deteriorating security situation along the Blue Line. During the meeting, Sa’ar emphasized that despite a US-brokered truce intended to halt hostilities, Hezbollah continues to engage in "systematic" violations that threaten to reignite a full-scale regional war. The Foreign Minister provided the UN envoy with evidence of ongoing military movements in southern Lebanon, arguing that the lack of international enforcement has allowed the terror group to regroup and maintain its offensive posture against Israeli civilian centers.

The Systematic Misuse of UNIFIL Peacekeeping Positions

A central theme of the discussion was Hezbollah’s strategic exploitation of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). Sa’ar alleged that the group has intentionally positioned its military assets, including rocket launchers and drone command centers, in immediate proximity to UN outposts. By using peacekeepers as "human shields," Hezbollah seeks to deter Israeli retaliatory strikes, a tactic Sa’ar described as a cynical manipulation of the UN’s mandate. He noted that many of the most recent barrages were launched from sites within meters of UNIFIL barriers, forcing the IDF to choose between allowing attacks to continue or risking international condemnation for strikes near neutral forces.

A Staggering Surge in Transborder Attacks

According to a readout from the Foreign Ministry, Sa’ar revealed the true scale of the aerial threat faced by Israel over the last eight weeks. Since the joint US-Israeli campaign against Iranian nuclear and ballistic infrastructure began on February 28, Hezbollah has launched roughly 10,000 missiles, rockets, and explosive drones toward Israeli territory. This unprecedented volume of fire has resulted in dozens of civilian casualties and forced the continued evacuation of northern border communities. Sa’ar argued that these numbers prove Hezbollah is not interested in a genuine de-escalation, but rather in maintaining a war of attrition to serve the strategic interests of the regime in Tehran.
