A Call for Territorial Expansion in Gaza

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has intensified his advocacy for a fundamental shift in Israel’s regional strategy, urging the government to move toward the permanent occupation of the Gaza Strip. During a public address, Smotrich insisted that the conclusion of active hostilities must be marked by the establishment of Israeli settlements within the Palestinian enclave. According to the Finance Minister, purely military accomplishments are insufficient without a corresponding expansion of the state’s sovereign borders to create what he describes as defensible frontiers.

The Symbolic Return to Sa-Nur

Smotrich delivered his remarks during a ceremony at Sa-Nur, a West Bank town that has become a symbol of the resettlement movement. The town was originally evacuated during the 2005 Disengagement from Gaza and the northern West Bank but was subsequently approved for resettlement or retroactively legalized by the government in May 2025. By choosing this location for his announcement, Smotrich linked the current Gaza policy to a broader historical effort to reverse previous territorial withdrawals and re-establish a permanent Israeli presence in contested areas.

Critique of Diplomatic Compromise

The Finance Minister directed sharp criticism toward opposition members who have advocated for following military success with political and diplomatic negotiations. Smotrich characterized such demands as a path toward surrender and defeat, arguing instead for a victory defined by the seizure of territory. He asserted that the state should focus on taking land from its enemies rather than engaging in handovers, framing territorial acquisition as the only legitimate conclusion to the ongoing war.
