A Decades-Old Cold Case Heats Up
Federal authorities significantly escalated their search on Wednesday for a fugitive linked to one of Philadelphia’s most brutal gang-related crimes. Trung Duc Lu, a 46-year-old Vietnamese national, has been added to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. The move comes more than a decade after the bodies of two brothers were pulled from the Schuylkill River, marking a renewed commitment by the Department of Justice to bring the final remaining suspect in the case to justice. The reward for Lu’s capture has been increased to $1 million.
The Torture and Murder of the Huynh Brothers
The charges against Lu stem from a harrowing incident in August 2014. Prosecutors allege that Lu and several co-conspirators kidnapped 31-year-old Vu Huynh and 28-year-old Viet Huynh. The brothers were subjected to brutal torture before being stabbed multiple times. To conceal the crime, the attackers bound the victims with zip ties, wrapped their heads in duct tape, and attached heavy weights to their bodies before dumping them into the Schuylkill River. While multiple other defendants have already been convicted and sentenced for their roles in the killings, Lu has remained at large.
Gang Affiliations and Aliases
Investigators believe Lu was a member of the "Born to Kill" (BTK) gang, also known as the Canal Boys, a group historically active in New York and Philadelphia. Lu, who worked as a nail technician, has used several aliases to evade detection, including Phong Le, Brendan Lu, and Calvin Lu. He is described as having distinctive tattoos, including a dragon and the words "Asian Pride" in cursive on his back, along with tiger and dragon tattoos on his upper arms. Although he previously resided in Queens, New York, federal agents believe he fled the United States years ago.
