Unprecedented Addition to FBI's Most Wanted Roster
Federal law enforcement reached a historical milestone on Thursday as the FBI added Anibal Alexander Canelon Aguirre to its "Ten Most Wanted Fugitives" list. Canelon Aguirre, known in criminal circles as "Prometheus" or "The Engineer," is the first individual in the program's 76 year history to be listed primarily for cybercrime. The FBI Omaha Field Office and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nebraska announced the designation during a joint news conference, highlighting a shift in national security priorities toward digital financial warfare. A reward of up to 1 million dollars is now being offered for information leading directly to his arrest.
The ATM "Jackpotting" Conspiracy
The federal warrant issued out of Omaha stems from a sophisticated "jackpotting" conspiracy that targeted financial institutions across the United States. According to investigators, Canelon Aguirre masterminded the development and deployment of custom malware designed to infect ATMs. Once installed, the malware allows unauthorized crews to force machines to dispense large volumes of cash on command. Federal authorities allege that this operation was not merely for personal gain but served as a primary revenue stream for Tren de Aragua (TdA), a violent transnational organization recently designated as a foreign terrorist group by the U.S. State Department.
National Security and Terrorist Funding
U.S. Attorney Lesley Woods described Canelon Aguirre as a direct threat to national security, emphasizing that the stolen millions were funneled through complex money laundering networks back to TdA’s leadership in Venezuela. Special Agent in Charge Eugene Kowel of FBI Omaha noted that the group is currently one of the most active and violent organizations operating within U.S. borders. By elevating Canelon Aguirre to the Ten Most Wanted list, federal agencies aim to "financially devastate" the organization by cutting off its technical architect and primary source of illicit capital.
