Immediate Response and Scene Management

First responders arrived at the Lower Kaimai site shortly before 6:00 AM to find a high-impact scene involving a heavy transport truck and a passenger vehicle. Despite the rapid arrival of medical and fire personnel, the occupant of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the truck was assessed by paramedics; however, details regarding their condition have not yet been released.

Serious Crash Unit Investigation

The Serious Crash Unit (SCU) is currently on-site conducting a forensic examination of the wreckage and road surface. This specialized unit is tasked with determining the contributing factors of the crash, including vehicle speed, road conditions, and mechanical integrity. As of late Thursday morning, the road remains cordoned off to ensure the preservation of evidence. Investigators are expected to remain at the Valley View Road intersection for several hours.

Traffic Diversions and Regional Impact

The closure of SH29 a critical link between the Waikato and the Bay of Plenty has forced Waka Kotahi (NZ Transport Agency) to implement widespread diversions. Motorists traveling over the Kaimai Range are being rerouted through alternative routes, such as State Highway 2 or State Highway 5, and have been warned to expect significant delays. Local residents in the Lower Kaimai area have also been advised of restricted access to secondary roads connected to the highway.
