A Pattern of Violence and Paranoia
Waitaanga locals testifying in court described a community that could be "a bit Days of Our Lives-y," where tensions between Bridson and his neighbor, Mathew David Hannon (the father of Hannon-McGinn), had reached a breaking point. Witnesses recalled an incident in August 2023 where Bridson allegedly attacked Hannon with a bottle and a pitchfork. Following this altercation, Hannon described as inherently paranoid and having his home equipped with extensive security cameras reportedly refused to return to Bridson's property, fearing for his safety.
The Fatal Confrontation and Alleged Cover-up
The Crown alleges that the conflict reached a terminal stage when Hannon called his son, Hannon-McGinn, for assistance. Hannon-McGinn, accompanied by his best friend Howe, traveled from Hamilton to "sort out" the dispute. While Hannon-McGinn admits to firing the fatal 20-gauge shotgun blast that hit Bridson in the stomach, his defense maintains he acted in self-defense. After the shooting, the Crown claims Bridson's body was dragged into his home, which was then set on fire. The charred remains were discovered by emergency services on the morning of October 11, 2023.
Community Perspectives on the Victim and Accused
Witnesses Tania Petley and James Browne provided a nuanced view of the deceased, describing him as a man who could be "mouthy" and "belligerent" when drinking, often making "black-out drunk" threats. Despite these tendencies, Petley expressed affection for Bridson, noting he would often be apologetic the following day. Browne testified that he frequently felt like an "adult sorting out two children" when mediating between Hannon and Bridson, who constantly argued over land use and hunting rights in the area.
