Allegations of Leadership Hijack and False Academic Credentials
A significant internal crisis has erupted within the Enugu State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Comrade Chika Idoko, a prominent party chieftain, has publicly accused former Governor Okwesilieze Nwodo of attempting to impose a preferred candidate, Augustine Akubue, on the party’s leadership. Idoko alleged that this move is a "brazen hijack" intended to serve personal political interests. He further revealed that Akubue is currently the subject of a formal petition to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) regarding allegations of a fictitious inaugural lecture and the false use of a professorial title.
Stakeholders Rally Behind Major General Chris Eze (Rtd)
In defiance of the alleged imposition, Idoko and other stakeholders have thrown their support behind Major General Chris Owushi Eze (Rtd). Described as a "June 12 unsung hero," General Eze was reportedly elected as the state chairman through a recently concluded state congress. Supporters argue that Eze’s mandate was earned through established party procedures and grassroots support, contrasting his legitimacy with what they describe as the "imposed" status of the rival faction. The slogan "Enugu ADC is not for sale" has become a rallying cry for members demanding transparency and internal democracy.
Concerns Over External Political Influence
The crisis has also raised questions about external interference. Idoko alleged that political influences linked to the APC are being masked under the guise of Peter Obi’s influence to destabilize the ADC in Enugu. He warned the ADC National Working Committee and the National Organizing Secretary against legitimizing any leadership arrangement not born from the party’s internal democratic processes. This warning comes at a delicate time as the party attempts to build public trust ahead of future electoral cycles.
