EBCC15: Axillary Radiotherapy Shows Promise as Less Invasive Alternative to Lymph Node Surgery for Breast Cancer Patients
SUMMARY
Preliminary results from the ADARNAT phase III trial, presented at the 15th European Breast Cancer Conference, suggest that axillary radiotherapy (ART) may be as effective as surgical dissection (ALND) for patients whose cancer has spread to limited lymph nodes after chemotherapy. The pilot study indicates that while radiotherapy causes temporary skin redness, it may reduce the long-term risk of lymphedema and functional arm complications.
