Deteriorating Conditions and the Initial Alarm

The incident began on Saturday afternoon when the two kayakers departed from Mahurangi with the intention of paddling to Manly Beach. However, as they entered the open waters between the two points, weather conditions worsened significantly. Winds increased to between 15 and 20 knots, creating choppy, rough seas that eventually overwhelmed the small craft.

The alarm was raised when a concerned member of their wider group contacted the police after the pair failed to arrive at Manly Beach as scheduled. By the time emergency services were notified, the kayakers were over 5.7 kilometers away from Stanmore Bay Beach, struggling to remain above water in the intensifying swell.

Digital Tracking and the Search Operation

Police Coastal Master Senior Constable Trevor Proctor spearheaded the immediate search response, which involved a multi-agency effort. Because the missing pair were not responding to text messages or voice calls, police utilized a mobile phone "locate" poll to pinpoint their digital signature. This technological intervention allowed rescuers to narrow down a vast search area between Mahurangi and Manly.

The Police Eagle helicopter was dispatched to provide aerial surveillance, while Coastguard vessels were tasked to the coordinated GPS coordinates. Upon arrival, rescuers found the two individuals in the water, holding onto the side of their kayak. The sea state was reportedly too rough for the pair to climb back into the vessel without assistance, leaving them vulnerable to fatigue and the elements.
