A 50-year-old Glen Eden man has been arrested after allegedly targeting the Police Eagle helicopter with a laser, causing "flash blindness" for the flight crew.

The Incident and Arrest
The event unfolded at approximately 2:35 am on Tuesday, April 14, 2026. According to Senior Sergeant Garry Larsen, a laser was shone directly into the Eagle's cockpit, subjecting the pilots to intense glare and a phenomenon known as "flash blindness."
Despite the visual interference, the helicopter’s thermal and optical sensors captured the act and pinpointed the exact residential address of the source. Ground units were dispatched immediately, taking a 50-year-old man into custody without incident.

The defendant has been charged with endangering transport, a serious criminal offence under New Zealand law.
Maximum Penalty: Up to 14 years' imprisonment.
