A Rare Entry Point into the World’s Most Prestigious Domain
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, a winery that frequently shatters global auction records, has spotlighted a unique offering from its acclaimed 2023 vintage. While a standard bottle of the estate's eponymous Romanée-Conti carries a suggested retail price of nearly $12,000, the 2023 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cuvée Duvault-Blochet has been positioned as an "ethereal" alternative at $623. This bottling, named after the domain's 19th-century founder Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet, offers enthusiasts a rare opportunity to experience the estate’s signature style without the five-figure investment usually required for its Grand Cru siblings.
Strategic Sourcing from Premier Grand Cru Terroir
The Cuvée Duvault-Blochet is distinct because it is crafted using grapes from younger vines located within DRC’s elite Grand Cru parcels, including Échézeaux and Grands Échézeaux. Under French wine regulations, when fruit from multiple Grand Cru sites in the same village is blended, the classification must be lowered to Premier Cru. Co-directors Perrine Fenal and Bertrand de Villaine noted that the 2023 season provided an abundance of ripe fruit, allowing these younger vines to produce a wine that serves as both an introduction to the domain's terroir and a snapshot of the specific vintage.
Exclusivity and the Shift Toward Restaurant Allocation
For the 2023 vintage, DRC has implemented a specific distribution strategy in the United States, earmarking the limited production of 3,791 bottles exclusively for restaurants. This move is intended to ensure the wine is enjoyed in its youth rather than being immediately lost to private cellars or the secondary market. Notable hospitality groups, including New York’s Catch Hospitality and high-end venues like RPM Steak in Chicago and The Grill in New York, are expected to feature the bottle, allowing diners to sample a domain-quality wine at a significantly friendlier price point.
