The VCAT Decision
The ruling overrules an earlier decision by Darebin City Council, which had blocked the construction of the 24/7 outlet. VCAT member Michael Deidun clarified that the tribunal's role was strictly limited to planning law, rather than cultural preference.
"This tribunal does not have the power to review the corporate approach of McDonalds... or whether it fits the ‘cool’ vibes of its context," Deidun stated.
Community Defiance
Despite the legal setback, local residents and activists are refusing to back down. A petition against the move garnered over 11,300 signatures, with residents citing several key concerns:
Loss of Character: Fears that a global conglomerate will overshadow the "local charm" of the Northcote precinct.
