What is the EES?
The EES is an automated IT system created to modernize border security. It replaces physical passport stamps with a digital record that tracks entries, exits, and entry refusals.
Data Collected: Facial images, fingerprints, and personal data from travel documents.
Purpose: To identify overstayers, combat identity fraud, and enhance internal security. Since its phased rollout began in October 2025, over 24,000 people have been refused entry due to document issues, and 600+ security risks have been identified.
Who Does It Affect?
The system applies to non-EU/Schengen citizens (including UK and US travelers) visiting for short stays—up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
