Navigating the "Disney High" Phenomenon
Lovato used the term "Disney High" to describe the insular, high-stakes world they occupied as a teenager. Because the network's top stars were constantly working, dating, and competing for the same roles, Lovato explained that their reality mirrored a typical high school experience, but amplified on a global stage. While they shared a unique bond with Cyrus and Gomez—noting that "no one else could relate" to their lifestyle—the environment was often marred by the network "pitting" the young women against each other to see who would be crowned the "number one girl."
The Struggle with Insecurity and Comparison
During the conversation, Lovato admitted that it was difficult to maintain self-esteem while being marketed as a "perfect" role model. "You naturally have insecurities at a young age, so you start comparing yourself to other people," Lovato noted. They recalled struggling with these comparisons while Cyrus and Gomez achieved stratospheric success. However, Lovato credited their mother’s advice—that "there's room for everyone" and it "isn't a competition"—as the guiding force that eventually allowed them to find peace with their peers’ individual journeys.
A "Beautiful" Foundational Friendship with Selena Gomez
Despite the professional friction, Lovato shared a rare, tender memory of their early days with Selena Gomez. The two stars actually met on the set of Barney & Friends as children, long before their Disney Channel debuts. Lovato expressed gratitude for that "built-in friendship," noting that having Gomez by their side provided a sense of safety when they first entered the "intense" Disney machine. While their relationship has evolved over the years, Lovato emphasized the importance of having someone who truly understood the "human" behind the "product."
