Allegations of a War on Dissent

Dele Momodu, a prominent chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former presidential candidate, has issued a stark warning regarding the state of democracy in Nigeria. In a series of statements posted to his X (formerly Twitter) page, Momodu alleged that President Bola Tinubu is actively working to "exterminate and obliterate" any viable political opposition. He characterized the current administration as "tyrannical," possessing an unprecedented "war chest" and utilizing the full appurtenances of power to ensure no competitive political alternative survives before the next electoral cycle.

Defending Atiku and Clarifying the PDP Crisis

Momodu addressed the ongoing internal friction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), specifically refuting claims that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar was the architect of the party's current woes. He argued that the decision to leave the PDP primary "wide open" was controlled by a group led by Nyesom Wike, and that Wike’s subsequent loss and move to support Tinubu were individual choices rather than Atiku's failures. Momodu questioned the logic of blaming Atiku for the fractures in the Labour Party or the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), suggesting instead that external state interference is the true culprit.

The "Stranglehold" on the Judiciary

A central tenet of Momodu's argument is the alleged influence the presidency holds over other branches of government. He specifically cited Nyesom Wike's immunity from suspension or expulsion within the PDP as evidence of a "stranglehold" on the judiciary supported by the presidency. According to Momodu, this protection allows pro-government factions to remain within opposition structures to act as destabilizing agents, effectively paralyzing the parties from within while the administration maintains an appearance of democratic process.
