Allegations of Systematic Opposition Suppression
Dele Momodu, a media mogul and current member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has raised an alarm over what he describes as President Bola Tinubu's "hostility" toward the opposition. Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) page on March 12, 2026, Momodu alleged that the current administration is willing to go to "any length" to eliminate competitive politics in Nigeria. He characterized the government as a tyrannical force that is leveraging the "appurtenances of power" to ensure that no credible challenge remains for the 2027 general elections.
Defending Atiku and Addressing the PDP Crisis
Momodu’s intervention specifically addressed the ongoing leadership friction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He dismissed claims that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar is responsible for the party's current fragmentation, pointing instead to the influence of Nyesom Wike and his alleged "stranglehold" on both the judiciary and the presidency. Momodu argued that the inability of the PDP to discipline dissenting members is a symptom of external interference by the Tinubu administration. "Was it Atiku that scattered the Labor and NNPP Parties?" Momodu questioned, suggesting a broader pattern of state-sponsored destabilization across all major opposition platforms.
A Call for Inter-Party Unity
The former presidential candidate warned that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state if citizens do not act. He urged Nigerians to unite "beyond political parties" to resist what he views as an attempt to "exterminate and obliterate" opposition. According to Momodu, the obsession with suppressing figures like Atiku Abubakar is a distraction from the larger issue of governance and democratic integrity. He noted that while the Constitution allows for legitimate political ambition, the current environment has been poisoned by an "unprecedented war chest" used to manipulate the political landscape.
