The Commencement of Post-Assad Judicial Proceedings
The Syrian Ministry of Justice has finalized preparations for the first public trials of symbolic figures from the former administration of ousted leader Bashar al-Assad. According to a ministry official speaking to AFP, the landmark proceedings are scheduled to begin on Sunday with the trial of Atif Najib, a former high-ranking security chief. This development follows months of internal restructuring within the Syrian judiciary aimed at addressing decades of alleged human rights abuses. Syrian Justice Minister Mazhar al-Wais confirmed on social media that the Damascus criminal court is now ready to begin what he described as the "transitional justice process," marking a critical turning point for a nation ravaged by over a decade of civil conflict.
Atif Najib and the Origins of the 2011 Uprising
The inaugural trial of Atif Najib carries immense symbolic weight for the Syrian public. Najib, a cousin of the former president, served as the head of political security in Daraa province, which is widely considered the cradle of the 2011 uprising. He is accused of orchestrating the initial violent crackdowns on protesters that catalyzed the nationwide conflict. Najib was arrested in January 2025 and has been a long-standing target of US Treasury sanctions for his role in human rights violations. His trial is expected to focus on the specific orders and tactical decisions that led to the escalation of violence in southern Syria during the early stages of the revolution.
Targeting the Captagon Trade and Paramilitary Units
Following the proceedings for Najib, the judiciary intends to bring Wassim al-Assad to trial. Another cousin of the ousted leader, Wassim al-Assad was arrested in June 2025 after years of leading a prominent paramilitary unit. International observers, including the US Treasury, which sanctioned him in 2023, have identified him as a central figure in the regional drug trafficking networks, particularly the illicit Captagon trade. Prosecutors are expected to present evidence linking his paramilitary operations to the systematic extraction of wealth through narcotics and the enforcement of regime control through irregular warfare.
