Arrest Made in Cold Case Investigation

Chicago authorities have announced a breakthrough in a homicide investigation dating back to last summer. Latheryan Buckner was taken into custody on Monday in the 2600 block of South California Avenue, located in the Little Village neighborhood. Following his arrest, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved one felony count of first-degree murder. Buckner is currently being held awaiting a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

Details of the Englewood Shooting

The charges stem from a violent encounter that occurred on August 4, 2025. Around 5:36 p.m., a 41-year-old man was standing near a sidewalk in the 1100 block of West 56th Street when he was struck in the chest by gunfire. The victim was rushed to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. While Buckner has been identified as the shooter, investigators have not yet disclosed a motive or clarified if there was a prior relationship between the two men.

Regional Crime Trends and Recent Arrests

This arrest is part of a broader effort by the Chicago Police Department to clear a backlog of violent crime cases from the previous year. It coincides with several other high-profile charges in the city, including a separate case where a man was charged with the murder of two elderly women on the South Side. These enforcement actions are taking place against a backdrop of significant suburban activity, including a string of gaming machine burglaries and a high-speed theft spree at the Oak Brook Mall involving multiple teenagers.
