Severe Sentences Handed Down for Heinous Farm Attack
A farm worker who orchestrated the brutal robbery and murder of his elderly employer in Ceres has been sentenced to 42 years of direct imprisonment. The Worcester Regional Court in the Western Cape delivered the sentence to 52-year-old Willem Olivier and his 24-year-old accomplice, Kelvin Vlok, on Tuesday. The duo, along with a third accomplice who was a minor at the time of the crime, entered into a plea and sentencing agreement with the State. The high-profile case has drawn significant attention to the safety of the farming community, with the court emphasizing the merciless nature of the attack on a vulnerable 77-year-old woman.
Wage Dispute Leads to Premeditated Violence
Evidence presented before the court revealed that the tragedy unfolded on March 4, 2023, at Papkuil Farm. Olivier reportedly recruited Vlok and the minor under the guise of resolving a wage dispute with his employer, Christina Walters. Upon arriving at the farm house, Olivier used a request for cigarettes to lure Walters into a vulnerable position. Once she returned, the trio accosted her, dragging her outside where they bound her hands and neck with a belt and barbed wire. The court heard horrifying details of how the three men repeatedly kicked the elderly woman while she lay helpless on the ground before proceeding to loot her home.
A Systematic Execution and Theft of Property
While Olivier and the minor kept watch over the injured Walters, Vlok entered the residence to steal groceries, alcohol, a cellphone, and four firearms with ammunition. In an act of extreme cruelty, the trio then used one of the stolen firearms to take turns shooting Walters as she lay on the ground. Following the execution, the perpetrators fled on foot to Olivier’s residence on the nearby Klein Papkuil Farm. Vlok and the minor eventually used a donkey cart to transport and hide the stolen weaponry in a remote field. The systematic nature of the crime and the subsequent attempt to conceal evidence were key factors in the State's pursuit of maximum sentencing.
