Government Signals Return To Litigation
Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson announced on Tuesday that the national government is returning to court to address the ongoing occupation of state-owned farms at Knoflokskraal. Accompanied by Western Cape Premier Alan Winde, the Minister stated that legal intervention is now necessary to prevent further unauthorized construction on the property located between Grabouw and Botriver. The move marks a significant escalation in the state's efforts to reclaim the land following failed attempts at direct engagement with those currently residing on the site.
Expansion Of Illegal Settlement Structures
The settlement, which first began as an illegal occupation in 2020, has grown to include over 4,000 structures erected just off the N2 highway. According to Western Cape MEC for Infrastructure Tertuis Simmers, what was initially framed as a land rights issue has been exploited for political gain during various election cycles. Government officials noted that despite previous discussions with community leaders, the footprint of the settlement has continued to expand, prompting the Department of Public Works to seek a formal court order to freeze all further development.
Allegations Of Syndicate Involvement
MEC Simmers detailed credible reports suggesting that organized criminal syndicates have embedded themselves within the Knoflokskraal community. He alleged that parcels of state-owned land are being sold illegally for amounts as low as 1,500 Rand. Simmers characterized the situation as a breakdown of governance and enforcement systems, stating that the occupation has transitioned from a simple land dispute into a significant security concern for the provincial administration.
