A Day in the Life: The Waikanae Shift
Helen, a support worker with 18 years of experience, shared her "particular Thursday" with RNZ to illustrate the mounting pressure on the sector:
The Cost of Commuting: Helen’s morning started with a $163 fuel bill.
The Mileage Deficit: After a shift covering 45km across Waikanae, Helen received roughly $37 in rebates. This is $15 less than the standard Inland Revenue (IRD) recommendation, which accounts for both fuel and vehicle depreciation.
The "Doubling Back" Problem: Due to client-focused rostering, Helen often has to travel 14km between appointments that are physically located just two streets apart.
Staffing Shortages: High turnover and fuel costs mean some clients aren't receiving their "morning" showers until 1:00 PM.
