A Decade of Continental Dominance

Cape Town International Airport has maintained its position as the premier aviation facility on the continent, securing the title of best airport in Africa for the eleventh year in a row. The recognition comes as part of the prestigious Skytrax World Airport Awards, a global benchmark for the industry determined by extensive customer satisfaction surveys. In addition to the primary title, the Cape Town hub was specifically cited for having the best staff performance in Africa and was recognized as the cleanest airport across the continent, reinforcing its reputation for operational quality.

Methodology Behind the Global Rankings

The results are derived from a comprehensive World Airport Survey that evaluated more than 575 facilities between August 2025 and February 2026. Participation spanned over 100 nationalities, with travelers rating their experiences across the entire transit journey, including check-in, security protocols, immigration, and shopping facilities. According to Fani Mphaphuli of the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), these awards serve as a vital affirmation of the resilience and professionalism displayed by employees and stakeholders in delivering seamless travel experiences to millions of passengers.

Success for Regional and Industrial Hubs

Beyond the primary success in Cape Town, several other South African locations featured prominently in the 2026 continental rankings. O.R. Tambo International Airport was named the second-best airport in Africa, while King Shaka International Airport in KwaZulu-Natal secured the fourth spot. King Shaka also distinguished itself on a global scale, appearing among the top ten airports worldwide that serve between 5 million and 10 million passengers annually. Furthermore, regional facilities in Gqeberha, Bloemfontein, and East London captured the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions respectively in the regional airport category.
