Shootout on San Juan Drive

The fatal encounter began shortly after 6:20 p.m. in a residential area of Baton Rouge. Preliminary reports from the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office (EBRSO) indicate that at least one vehicle opened fire in the 5700 block of San Juan Drive. Witnesses reported that individuals on foot returned fire, leading to a violent exchange in the street. The 8 year old boy, who has not yet been publicly identified, was caught in the crossfire.

Medical Emergency and Pronouncement

First responders arrived at the scene to find the child suffering from critical gunshot wounds. He was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency surgery. However, officials confirmed later that night that the child died as a result of his injuries. The EBRSO has not yet clarified if the child was a bystander or if there was a specific target in the vicinity of the 5700 block.

Investigation and Public Appeal

Detectives are currently on the scene collecting ballistic evidence and interviewing potential witnesses. As of Monday morning, no arrests have been made, and a description of the vehicle involved has not been released. The sheriff’s office is urging anyone with information, surveillance footage, or knowledge of the suspects to contact Crime Stoppers anonymously. This tragic loss of a young life has once again put a spotlight on the escalating issues of street-level gun violence in the Baton Rouge area.
