Alternative Powertrains Drive Market Growth

The Austrian automotive sector has experienced a robust start to 2026, with passenger car registrations rising 17% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year. Data from Statistics Austria reveals that a total of 77,235 new cars were registered between January and March. This growth is almost entirely attributed to the surging demand for hybrid and electric vehicles, which saw a combined increase of 29.5%. Manuela Lenk, Director General at Statistics Austria, noted that while the appetite for greener technology is flourishing, the market for conventionally powered vehicles has largely stagnated.

The Shift Toward Electric and Hybrid Dominance

For the first time, alternative powertrains have solidified a clear majority in the Austrian market, accounting for 63.5% of all new registrations—up from 57.4% in early 2025. Petrol-hybrid vehicles emerged as the standout category, with registrations skyrocketing by 42.0% to reach 28,460 units. Pure electric vehicles (EVs) also maintained strong momentum, posting a 22.4% increase. Conversely, the market for diesel-hybrid options showed signs of cooling, recording a 10.7% decline.

Corporate vs. Private Ownership Trends

Commercial demand continues to be the primary engine of the Austrian car market. Businesses and public sector entities accounted for 65.8% of all registrations in the first quarter, while private individuals made up the remaining 34.2%. Interestingly, the preference for specific technologies varies by buyer type; private ownership was most prevalent among those choosing petrol-hybrids, followed by traditional petrol and pure electric models.
