Rising Revenue Despite Falling Infringement Numbers

Figures obtained via the Official Information Act show a dramatic climb in fine totals, rising from just over $18 million in 2020 to the current $49 million peak. Interestingly, the number of individual tickets actually dropped from a high of 640,000 in 2024 to approximately 581,638 in 2025. Auckland Transport (AT) has confirmed that this "inverse" trend—where fewer tickets result in significantly more money—is almost entirely due to higher nationally set infringement fees introduced by the central government in late 2024.

The Rise of Automated Camera Enforcement

The methodology of parking enforcement in Auckland has undergone a technological revolution. AT now operates a specialized fleet of 25 camera equipped vehicles, which have largely replaced traditional on foot officers as the primary source of infringements. In 2025, these automated "camera cars" issued the vast majority of tickets, totaling 385,887, compared to 254,268 from physical officers. This automation allows for rapid, high volume scanning of parked vehicles, significantly increasing the efficiency of detection across the city’s transport network.

Shifting Patterns in Driver Non-Compliance

There has been a fundamental shift in the types of parking offenses being committed by Aucklanders. While overstaying time limits was once the most frequent violation, paid parking breaches—such as failing to pay or entering incorrect details into apps—have now taken the lead. These specific offenses have more than tripled since 2020, with over 154,000 such fines issued in the last year alone. This shift aligns with AT’s broader strategy of increasing hourly parking rates across the CBD and surrounding suburbs.
