An Unexpected Early Window
Typically expected later in March, the arrival of the leatherbacks in early April 2026 marks a significant biological head start for the season. According to SINAC (National System of Conservation Areas), while Tortuguero is famous for its green turtle population later in the year, the March-to-June window belongs to the leatherback. The early arrival allows visitors to experience these nesting rituals before the heavy tourist crowds of the mid-year summer season arrive.
Witnessing the Gentle Giants
Leatherbacks are the largest reptiles in the ocean, capable of reaching weights up to 1,500 pounds (680 kg) and lengths of 8 feet (2.4 m). Unlike their hard-shelled cousins, they possess a unique, leathery carapace that allows them to dive deeper than any other turtle.
Intimate Nesting: Unlike the massive arribadas (mass arrivals) of Olive Ridleys on the Pacific coast, Caribbean leatherbacks nest individually, making each encounter feel personal and quiet.
Controlled Access: To protect the turtles’ night vision and nesting success, SINAC and local operators utilize a "red-light only" rule. Tours are strictly limited to small groups of 10, led by certified trackers.
