Toxic Pigments Permeate the Mexican Retail Paint Sector

Data from a peer reviewed study published in the Annals of Work Exposures and Health indicates a severe public health crisis involving the widespread sale of lead chromate in Mexico. Researchers discovered that 55% of all consumer paints tested across the country contained lead pigments, with some products exhibiting concentrations as high as 29%. According to the study, the absence of stringent regulatory ceilings on lead content in Mexico has turned the nation into a primary market for these hazardous materials, which are frequently applied to residential homes, educational facilities, and public infrastructure.

American Industry Giants Linked to Hazardous Lead Exports

While many global competitors moved away from toxic additives over a decade ago, prominent U.S. firms and private equity groups remain deeply embedded in the production and sale of lead chromate. Sherwin Williams, currently the largest paint manufacturer globally, continues to market products in Mexico that contain lead concentrations of 8% despite facing significant legal challenges regarding child lead poisoning in the United States. According to Perry Gottesfeld, Executive Director of Occupational Knowledge International, the company has explicitly denied requests to terminate the production of lead based paints for the Mexican market.

Institutional Investment and the Global Distribution of Carcinogens

The reach of lead chromate extends beyond traditional paint manufacturers to the portfolios of major American private equity firms, specifically Blackstone and American Securities. These entities are currently involved in the manufacture and global distribution of lead chromate, a substance classified as a human carcinogen due to its hexavalent chromium content. Sofía Chávez, the coordinator of the study and Director of Casa Cem, has issued a public call for these financial institutions to immediately cease the marketing of these compounds, noting that the chemical is still legally permitted in most nations despite its known neurological and physical risks.
