The "Dropped Cash" Distraction Tactic
Investigators began tracking the group in March 2026 after a surge in reports of a specific "distraction" method used at major shopping centres. According to NSW Police, the scam involved a calculated two-person maneuver:
The Approach: A member of the group would approach an elderly shopper, claiming the victim had dropped a wallet or cash on the floor.
The Theft: As the victim opened their purse or wallet to check their belongings, a second person would surreptitiously snatch their bank card.
The Fraud: The stolen cards were then used immediately for high-value fraudulent transactions before the victims realized their cards were missing.
Between February 11 and March 26, the syndicate allegedly conducted fraudulent transactions totalling over $150,000.
