A Last-Minute Opportunity

Appearing on the Big Bro With Kid Cudi podcast, the 52-year-old actor explained that the casting process for the Adam McKay-directed comedy was a whirlwind. Scott was not the production's first choice for Derek, the hyper-successful, acapella-singing younger brother of Will Ferrell’s character, Brennan.

“Someone had the role and then scheduling, they had to bail, so they had to cast it pretty quickly,” Scott shared. Because he assumed the role was out of his reach, Scott felt a sense of freedom during his audition that allowed him to "just go for it." His fearless performance ultimately secured him a spot alongside comedy heavyweights Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly.

Transformative Analysis: Learning Improv "At the Olympics"

For Scott, Step Brothers was a trial by fire. At the time, he had very few comedy credentials and found the heavy reliance on improvisation intimidating. He likened the experience of improvising with Ferrell and Reilly—two of the world's premier comedic actors—to "learning how to do the high jump at the Olympics."

Initially terrified, Scott spent the four-month shoot observing his costars and finding his own comedic rhythm. He identified a dinner scene as his personal breakthrough. While improvising back and forth with John C. Reilly, Scott realized he had moved past overthinking and was finally "flowing" with the scene. The validation came immediately after the take when Reilly turned to him and said, “Alright. That was fun. Like, wasn't that cool?”
