Tragedy Strikes in Broad Daylight
A vibrant Brooklyn community was shattered Wednesday around 1:20 p.m. when gunfire erupted at a crowded street corner. According to the New York City Police Department, two individuals on a moped approached the intersection of Moore and Humboldt Streets. The passenger on the vehicle discharged a firearm multiple times toward an intended target. Tragically, a stray round struck 7-month-old Kaori Patterson-Moore, who was positioned on the sidewalk among several adults and other children.
Emergency Response and Fatal Outcome
First responders rushed the infant to a nearby hospital, but medical staff were unable to save her; she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch addressed the media during a somber news conference Wednesday evening, describing the event as a tragedy that "shocks the conscience." Authorities confirmed that the child was an unintended victim of what investigators believe to be a gang-related dispute.
Crash Leads to Custody of One Suspect
The suspects fled the scene immediately after the shooting, but their escape was cut short just two blocks away. Commissioner Tisch reported that the moped collided with an oncoming car, causing both riders to fall. While the passenger—believed to be the shooter—lost both his shoes in the impact and fled on foot, the other rider was injured and taken into local hospital care. That individual is currently in police custody in connection with an unrelated investigation, though he fits the description of one of the moped riders involved in the homicide.
