The Transit Hub Bottleneck
While direct travel from the Middle East to Australia represents a smaller portion of the market, the region serves as a critical gateway for European travelers. Tourism Economics director Helen McDermott noted that the vast majority of at-risk visits are from European source markets—such as the UK, where visitors spent $2.87 billion last year—who typically transit through Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Doha.
The report highlights several layers of risk:
Transit Disruption: 28 million annual visitors globally who transit through the Middle East are at risk.
Capacity Constraints: An additional 60 million visits worldwide are threatened by tightened flight capacity and rerouting.
Increased Costs: Operational hurdles and jet fuel volatility are leading to significantly higher airfares and longer journey times.
