Illegal Highway Maneuver Results in Multi-Vehicle Carnage

A catastrophic collision on the N3 Toll Route has led to the arrest of a Zimbabwean truck driver following an early morning incident near the Tugela Plaza in KwaZulu-Natal. According to preliminary findings released by the Road Traffic Inspectorate, the crash occurred at approximately 3am on Thursday. Investigating officers reported that the driver attempted to execute an illegal U-turn on the high speed corridor, which directly resulted in a collision involving a passenger bus and an additional heavy motor vehicle.

Emergency Response and Hospitalization of Bus Passengers

The impact of the maneuver was felt most severely by those on board a bus carrying 53 passengers at the time of the accident. Medical authorities confirmed that 25 individuals sustained various injuries and required immediate transport to Ladysmith Provincial Hospital for specialized treatment. While the remaining 29 passengers were reported to have escaped the wreckage without physical injury, the scale of the emergency required a massive deployment of provincial rescue resources to manage the scene and clear the transit route.

Admission of Guilt Amid Intensified Traffic Enforcement

Siboniso Duma, a provincial official, revealed that the driver was taken into custody after allegedly admitting to the illegal turn when questioned by the RTI Ladysmith team. According to Duma, the driver reportedly pleaded for mercy during the initial interrogation on site. This arrest falls under the umbrella of the #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign, a strategic enforcement operation designed to target heavy motor vehicle violations and improve safety on South Africa’s primary economic arteries, including the N2 and N3 highways.
