Assessing Convention Readiness

Accompanied by high-ranking party officials, Minister Nyesom Wike conducted a comprehensive inspection of the designated convention venue on Friday night. Wike reported that preparations are approximately 95% complete, with final seating arrangements for an estimated 2,500 delegates already finalized. The delegation included notable figures such as Convention Planning Chairman Okezie Ikpeazu, BoT Chairman Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, and Caretaker Chairman Mohammed Abdulrahman. The Minister’s presence at the site serves as a public confirmation of the current leadership's control over the party's administrative machinery as they transition into the two-day elective event starting Sunday, March 29.

Dismissing Judicial Roadblocks

A central theme of the briefing was the dismissal of a Supreme Court appeal filed by the group led by Tanimu Turaki (SAN). Wike asserted that the ongoing legal challenges regarding the nullification of previous factional conventions have no legal bearing on the current proceedings. He emphasized that the party’s priority is to move forward with its leadership transition rather than remaining stalled by litigation. By framing the convention as a legally sound and inevitable process, the Minister aimed to reassure delegates and supporters that the party's official trajectory remains uninterrupted by internal opposition groups.

The "Big Umbrella" and Reconciliation

Wike utilized the party’s traditional "umbrella" metaphor to address persistent internal friction. He acknowledged that while some members remain aggrieved, the PDP is expansive enough to eventually accommodate all dissatisfied parties. "There will always be a few who are not happy," Wike stated, noting that formal reconciliation efforts are scheduled to continue immediately following the convention's conclusion. This approach suggests a "vote first, talk later" strategy, prioritizing the establishment of a recognized National Working Committee before addressing the deep-seated grievances of the Turaki and Makinde-aligned factions.
