Immigration Status and the Green List

In New Zealand, ambulance paramedics are currently classified under the Green List Tier 1 by Immigration New Zealand. This status identifies the profession as a high-priority role, theoretically providing a fast-track to residency. However, a spokesperson for the Minister of Immigration clarified that these requirements are primarily designed for experienced professionals. While the door is open for international talent, the government generally expects employers to prioritize suitable New Zealand-based candidates before recruiting from overseas.

Rural Opportunities vs. Metropolitan Satiation

While metropolitan centers in New Zealand often have a steady supply of staff, the NZ Ambulance Association has identified critical shortages in rural sectors. Secretary Mark Quin noted that international graduates are most likely to find success in regions where recruitment remains a constant struggle. Key areas of opportunity include:

North Island: Ohakune, Taumarunui, the East Coast, and Northland.

South Island: The West Coast.
