Modular Refinery Expansion Bolsters Regional Energy Supply

Waltersmith Refining and Petrochemical Company has officially reached a new operational milestone by doubling the capacity of its modular refinery in Ohaji-Egbema, Imo State. During a technical inspection by high-level regulators, the firm confirmed that its processing volume has increased from 5,000 barrels per day to 10,000 barrels per day. This expansion follows the successful commissioning of the first phase in 2020 and signifies a maturing phase for Nigeria’s midstream sector as local players aggressively pursue self-sufficiency in refined petroleum products.

Regulators Commend Local Content Success In Ohaji-Egbema

The facility recently hosted a joint delegation led by Felix Omatsola Ogbe of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB) and Saidu Mohammed of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). Officials described the project as a premier model for local content development, highlighting its role in capital retention and industrialization. The NCDMB, which provided a catalytic equity investment in 2018, noted that the refinery has already supplied over 1.1 billion liters of refined products, including diesel and kerosene, to domestic and regional markets.

Diversification Strategy Beyond Standard Crude Processing

Chairman of Waltersmith Petroman, Abdulrazak Isa, outlined a transformative vision for the company that extends far beyond simple oil field operations. Having evolved into a diversified energy player, the firm recently acquired assets from Shell Petroleum Development Company through Renaissance Africa Energy Ltd in early 2025. This strategic positioning allows the company to leverage internal feedstock for its refining operations, ensuring a more stable supply chain for its production of naphtha, heavy fuel oil, and household kerosene across the West African sub-region.
