Evidence of Physical Violence and Video Recovery
During the investigation, detectives recovered video evidence that captured St. Clair-Helm carrying one of the infants solely by the head and neck, forcing the child's full body weight to be supported by those areas. The footage also showed the father striking the baby on the back five to six times with enough force to produce an audible sound. These recordings played a crucial role in the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s decision to upgrade the initial charges to more severe Class 4 felonies.
Medical Examinations and Extent of Injuries
Both infants underwent forensic examinations at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital which revealed a harrowing list of physical injuries. Medical experts noted that the children were not yet old enough to move or roll over, meaning the injuries could not have been self-inflicted.
The examinations documented the following for the first infant:
Bruising across the ears, face, torso, back, and legs.
