Confrontation in the Capital

Belgrade's city center became a flashpoint of civil unrest on Tuesday as police used truncheons to disperse a crowd of hundreds of chanting students. Demonstrators labeled the officers "traitors" and "dogs" after a tactical unit entered the University of Belgrade’s administrative buildings. The physical altercation followed a police search that seized computers and documents, a move University Rector Vladan Djokic called a raid on the "conscience" of the academic community. The Rector maintained that the police entered without a valid legal explanation, despite official claims to the contrary.

The Catalyst: An Accidental Death or Pretext?

The official police justification for the raid centers on the tragic death of a 25-year-old female student who fell from a faculty building window last Friday. Serbian Police Director Dragan Vasiljevic stated that officers were acting on a specific court order to seek evidence related to the fatality. However, the discovery of protest-related materials—including gas masks, walkie-talkies, banners, and firecrackers—during the search has led activists to believe the investigation into the student's death was used as a pretext to disrupt and incriminate the anti-government movement.

A Year of Escalating Tensions

These clashes are the latest chapter in a sustained period of unrest that began in late 2024. The movement gained significant momentum in November 2024 following the railway station awning collapse in Novi Sad, which killed 16 people and became a symbol for government negligence and corruption. Since then, students have occupied various faculties across the country, demanding greater accountability and democratic reforms. The protesters represent a broad coalition of opposition leaders and rights watchdogs who accuse President Aleksandar Vucic and the ruling populist party of stifling media freedom and maintaining ties to organized crime.
